Red Moon Creative Arts Theatre – A Beloved Cultural Treasure

Founded on the principle that imagination is a vital tool for personal growth, communication, and social connection, Red Moon Creative Arts Theatre is one of Co. Wexford’s most beloved cultural treasures. Under the artistic direction of Michael Way, Red Moon has long been recognized as a premier Theatre-in-Education company—currently in residence at the Wexford Arts Centre—specializing in original, professional, and endlessly vibrant productions for young people.

Through a rich blend of multi-media storytelling, puppetry, face painting, and specially commissioned comedy and drama, Red Moon creates immersive experiences that build self-awareness and confidence in children of all ages.

A Storied Partnership: The Kilmore Quay Seafood Festival

Red Moon Theatre is inextricably linked to the Kilmore Quay Seafood Festival. Since the first event back in 1985, Red Moon has served as the creative heartbeat of our annual coastal celebration becoming a cherished summer tradition spanning four decades.

Every July, as the village gathers to celebrate what the sea has provided, Red Moon transforms the festival into a playground of theatrical magic and family fun with the following events:

The Art & Drama Summer Camp for Children

In the days leading up to the festival, Red Moon hosts its legendary summer camp for children aged 7–12. It’s a high-energy week of creativity where local and visiting children craft the very artwork and performance pieces featured in Thursday’s opening parade

The Grand Festival Parade

Red Moon traditionally spearheads the visual spectacle of the festival’s opening night. Leading the procession through the village down to the harbour, the group provides wonderful colour and flair to the event.

The Teddy Bears Picnic

A family favourite every year, the picnic usually takes place at the playground when the weather-gods allow.

The Puppet Show

An afternoon favourite of traditional puppet theatre.

Life’s a Beach

Always a great afternoon on the Little Beach in Kilmore Quay with Michael at the helm of fun and games with sandcastles galore competing for the title.

The Submersibles

While Michael Way is best known as the theatrical driving force behind the Red Moon Creative Arts Theatre, he is also a passionate musician. When he isn’t directing street pageants or running youth drama camps, he channels his creative energy into his Wexford-based band, The Submersibles. The Submersibles are a high-energy live band whose style leans heavily into classic rock, blues, and heavy grooves. The band acts as a wonderful extension of Michael’s community-driven spirit—playing local venues, contributing to the cultural fabric of the Wexford coast, and occasionally intertwining the local music scene with the festive energy of the area’s summer events. Whether he is holding a director’s megaphone or a guitar, Michael Way’s work is entirely about bringing people together through a shared love of performance.
